Please introduce yourself to our readers..
My name is Vanessa and I’m from the tiny state of Rhode Island. I’m a small business owner, a mother, and I love my job!
Can you tell us what company you work for?
I am the owner of Post Road Soap Company. I make soap, bath, and body products that are detergent and chemical free. When my daughter was born, I started becoming more aware of the ingredients in food and the products around my home. I made our diets healthy and I started cutting out chemicals. My first product was a Bentonite Clay diaper rash cream. I did some research, whipped up a batch, and as I hoped it worked well! A few months later, I opened my business and have a variety of wonderful, all natural bath products!
What are the exact responsibilities of your job?
As a one woman shop, I handle each and every aspect of a business. I order supplies, keep track of the books, create and package my products. I promote my business everywhere I go and I’m always making new contacts.
What is it about your job that makes you love it?
I love the challenge. It’s a learning experience each step I take. It keeps me on my toes! From creating new recipes to making business decisions, I enjoy every bit of it!
What particular skills or talents are most essential to completing your tasks?
I feel passion and determination are most important in my line of work. Anyone can do what they love, but it takes serious drive to make a hobby into a business.
What level of education would you say is required to perform your role?
Being an entrepreneur requires a lot of knowledge, not so much college credits. Having a college degree can be beneficial but I don’t feel it’s required to own a business.
Do you find that you bring your work home with you? (And is that a good or bad thing?)
I work right in my home and it’s a fabulous thing! I wake up and make breakfast, have a coffee, water the flowers, read to my daughter, then start working. I’m spoiled!
How does this job compare to other jobs you’ve held in the past?
Where do I begin? No other job allowed me to stay home with my daughter. That’s the best part!
What is your favorite food?
Pepperoni Pizza… no contest!
