Team building is an ongoing process that helps a work group evolve into a cohesive unit. The team members not only share expectations for accomplishing group tasks, but trust and support one another and respect one another’s differences. Our next guest shares her way of making team building events fun.
Please Introduce Yourself to our Readers
My Name is Lisa Jennings.
Can you tell us what company you work for? What is your title there?
Owner of Wildly Different and Masters of the Hunt
What are the exact responsibilities of your job?
I play for a living! Wildly Different delivers unique events for team building, networking and corporate social responsibility. Masters of the Hunt creates and implements treasure and scavenger hunts that bring company’s brand messages to life.
What is it about your job that makes you love it?
When the phone rings, I never know what opportunity is waiting for us on the other end. Will we deliver an Amazing Race-style activity that reinforces product knowledge for 2,500 sales professionals conducting a training conference on board a week-long cruise? Will we create a pirate treasure hunt for a resort in the Bahamas to compliment their 4th of July weekend festivities? Will we get to create a charitable game show activity in which the company donates over $10,000 worth of goods to the Boys & Girls Club? All of these and more have actually happened to us!
What particular skills or talents are most essential to completing your tasks?
It’s an interesting dichotomy – you must have the creative skills to constantly come up with new ideas, but the organizational skills to make sure the experience is a seamless one.
What level of education would you say is required to perform your role?
I believe having the right attitude and skills is more important than the level of education. But, it never hurts to have a college degree. Most of our people have degrees in Leisure Services/Recreation (that’s the degree I have as well), Hospitality/Event Management and Marketing.
Do you find that you bring your work home with you? (And is that a good or bad thing?)
Definitely! Our work happens days, nights and weekends, so we work non-traditional hours. Because of that, we have flex time in our office, which is a good thing. It allows us to take an afternoon off to get personal matters addressed, without feeling guilty! We do a lot of long hours as well – I can often only work on clues for hunts for instance, once the office phone stops ringing after 5pm. But, the positive far outweighs the negative – we get to travel to great locations and do some really cool events!
How does this job compare to other jobs you’ve held in the past?
I would never want to work for anyone else again or do anything different! I love what I do, the constant surprises that await, my clients and everyone who works with me (they are like family).
What is your favorite food?
Dark chocolate mixed with peanut butter (a girl has to have some protein, right?).
