Attention spans today are shorter than ever, thanks in no small part to the internet. The ever quickening pace of everyday life doesn’t help anything either. If you aren’t able to grab the attention of consumers and keep it, your business is going to suffer for it. So what can you do to grab the attention of your customers, and fast?
Create Novelty
Take a minute and think about the interactions you’ve had with businesses that really stood out to you. What do they have in common? The short answer: novelty. There was something about the interaction that was different from the others, enough so that it grabbed your attention and became memorable. You can use that concept to grab the attention of your customers. Make your brand stand out so that it is easy to pick out from your competition. Find what makes you truly unique and capitalize on that.
Improve Packaging
What does your product packaging look like? If you were a customer speed walking down an isle, would your packaging make your product stand out and get noticed, or would it just blend in with everything else? Improving your packaging can take advantage of that split-second window you have to capture customer attention. Be deliberate in your color choice, where you put your logo, and the size, style, and placement of any words you have on the packaging.
Trigger a Positive Emotional Response
Customers buy things for two general reasons: first, they think it will solve a problem they have, and second, they think it will make them feel good. If you can convince your customers that you can do both of those things for them, you’re probably in a pretty good place. Find ways to trigger positive emotional responses with your advertisements right from the beginning. You could open with something funny, something pleasantly surprising, or something that elicits feelings of joy. If you can surprise your customers and make them feel good immediately on the back of that, you’re probably on to something that is likely to be pretty effective for getting their attention.
Getting the attention of your customers in quick fashion isn’t easy, but it can be done. Find ways to stand out from your competition, improve your packaging, and craft advertisements that trigger positive emotional responses. You may only have a second or two to hook your customers, but if you do it right, that second or two is all you really need.
