One of the most important traits an entrepreneur can have is passion. Passion is what motivates someone; that passion you feel for something can drive your business and often times, end it. Our next guest shares her story…
Please introduce yourself to our readers…
My name is Yunche Wilson and I am the Founder of WhoRYou Marketing Academy, an online membership site that focuses on real marketing training based on my experience, I have spent my entire career in marketing & PR and have had the pleasure of working with one man operations all the way to Fortune 500 companies. Now as a business and mindset coach, I have the ability to work with entrepreneurs and their passions more closely.
You once started your own business – what was it (What Problem/Need/Service did you fulfill?)
One of the businesses I started (and owned for quite some time), was my marketing & PR firm where I catered to small and medium-sized businesses. The focus here was to provide marketing and PR services as needed without constricting companies to one service for the entire life of the contract.
What made you decide to go out on your own vs work for someone else?
Honestly I was tired of being told what to do, when to do it and how to do it. I didn’t like the politics and my salary being capped. I craved freedom on all fronts and knew the only way to achieve this was to own my own business.
Did you take any outside funding?
No. I did everything myself. Built my website, created business cards, designed sales sheets all with my little computer from home.
Did you have any partners?
No. I wanted to go at this alone based on my vision and without having to run anything past anyone.
What was your vision/goal for the company? (Did you meet that?)
My original goal was to create a flourishing firm that expanded into other cities with employees servicing small businesses in these additional locations. That did not happen. Once I figured out that I had moved from being employed at one job to owning a job (on my own), I decided it wasn’t for me.
What was your company culture like? Did it ever change?
Being that I was the company, the company culture was very high stressed. I often worked 10 hour days and spent more time researching and educating my clients than truly executing things that needed to be done. There were days that were more relaxed but for the most part it was very high stressed.
Why are you not with that business anymore?
I decided to move on to a business model that would provide more passive income with a flexible schedule. I wanted to be in love with marketing again so I decided to close down my consulting firm and move onto what is now, my coaching business.
Would you do it again?
No. There were great lessons learned but I don’t want to return to the consulting world.
What are you doing now?
Now I am focused on growing my membership base at WhoRYou Marketing University and coaching business owners on the ideal course of action to take when it comes to marketing and taking their business to a new level.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting their own business?
Just go for it. You don’t have to know everything and your plan doesn’t have to be perfect. Action is the most critical factor in starting your business. Too many people get stuck at the planning phase and never get it off the ground.
What is your favorite song?
My Favorite song right now is “Can’t Hold Us” by Ryan Macklemore.
