What are the main reasons people love their jobs? The pay immediately comes to mind as do benefits, co-worker comradery and work life balance. However, one of the greatest satisfaction one can derive from their job is the ability to truly help others. Our next guest shares his story about helping other people as a Chiropractor.
Can you tell us what company you work for?
I’m self-employed at Daniel Fung Chiropractic and Active Release Techniques® in Redwood City and San Rafael, California.
What is your title there?
Chiropractor and Active Release Techniques®(ART) provider. By the way, ART is a soft-tissue injury treatment system designed at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
What are the exact responsibilities of your job?
I treat all musculoskeletal injuries, sports injuries and I specialize in tennis elbow and shoulder injuries.
What is it about your job that makes you love it?
I get to talk about my favorite sport, tennis all day long. Nearly 70% of my patients are tennis players and come in with their various injuries. The most common injury I see is tennis elbow.
What particular skills or talents are most essential to completing your tasks?
My expertise is in two types of treatments –chiropractic and active release techniques allows me to treat and successfully heal nearly every soft tissue injury that comes in the door. These include tennis and golfers elbow, rotator cuff injuries, backs, necks, knees, feet … You name it. Between the two techniques I can release scar tissue from both soft tissues and joints which restores a person’s range of motion and stops re-injury.
What level of education would you say is required to perform your role?
I have a doctorate in chiropractic as well as additional training in Active Release Techniques.
Do you find that you bring your work home with you? (And is that a good or bad thing?)
I rarely have to bring any work home with me unless it’s me treating out of my house on occasion.
How does this job compare to other jobs you’ve held in the past?
Nearly all of my other jobs in the past involved me sitting at a desk behind a computer screen. Sedentary jobs like those are very unhealthy in my opinion because they promote poor posture which is very damaging to the musculoskeletal system. The newest part of my practice and fastest growing are injuries stemming from too much texting or laptop use.
Another job I had was teaching tennis. This was fun but was very difficult because I would have to travel around to public courts. Now, I actually use my knowledge of tennis on a daily basis at work because one of the leading causes of tennis injury is improper technique.
What is your favorite food?
My favorite food is/are Spanish tapas!
